Match report Thatcham Town 2nd XI travelled to Chalfont St Peter this weekend with a young side containing of 4 players under 16 and hoping to keep up with the top of the Thames Valley Div 3B leader board.

After winning the toss TTCC elected to bat first on a pitch which looked as though it would wear and assist the spinners John Williams and Nick Monger as the game went on. Unfortunately after a quick fire start resulting in 24 runs off the first 4 overs Gavin McDonald was well caught low down at short cover off the bowling of Ahmed. Following this TTCC suffered a collapse with leading run scorer Stuart Newman departing LBW for 3, Jamie Young was bowled for 5, Nick Monger for 0 and Stephen Bird for 2. This left TTCC at 5 for 54 in only the 13th over. Simon Rider was showing his true ability however trying to anchor the innings and made his way to 58 before he was bowled by one that crawled along the ground from short of a length. Following that only John Williams with a patient 18 was the only other TTCC batsmen to make double figures. This left TTCC all out for 111 off 35 overs and a lot of work to do.

With the ever green Tim Mahoney resorting to the long run up to extract any venom from the pitch he provided the perfect start with a wicket in his first over. Chalfont St Peter sensing that an upset could be on the cards sent in pinch hitter M Ahmed who proceeded to hit 40 in 8 overs before being bowled by the young spinner Nick Monger with the score at 2 for 67. A steady partnership then developed until Tim Mahoney was re introduced into the attack and Stephen Bird took a well judged catch at mid on with the score at 3 for 97. TTCC then lifted into overdrive with the young and energetic team producing two run outs and a further wicket each for Tim Mahoney and Simon Rider to leave the home team on 7 for 106. Unfortunately a missed catch that would have seen Tim Mahoney on a hat trick failed to stick and with a couple of big shots Chalfont St Peter were home however the wheels were defiantly wobbling.

Overall it was a below par batting performance from the TTCC 2nd's that has to be addressed in future weeks but the enthusiasm and never say die attitude means that they will end up pulling some games out of the fire as the season progresses.
