Match report The rain came to spoil a potentially exciting finish to Thatcham II’s game against Marlow Park on Saturday with the visitors needing 59 from eleven overs with six wickets in hand but with two new batsmen at the crease.

Following the early departure of Stephen Bird, Iain Cottingham and Tom Mahoney set about building Thatcham’s innings. Mahoney played with a maturity beyond his 17 years, dealing particularly harshly with anything short and stroking the ball well through the covers. Cottingham meanwhile played in his inimitable style, blocking most things but occasionally despatching the ball to the edge of the square.
Mahoney was first to 50, Cottingham followed ages afterwards and then fell, astonishingly reaching the boundary only to be caught for 50, ending a partnership of 130. When Mahoney fell almost immediately afterwards Thatcham were in danger of failing to reach 200 until Sean Huckins (37) rolled back the years with some glorious smashing all round mid wicket. With good support from Nick Monger (21 not out) Thatcham closed on 220 for 6 from 52 overs.

Marlow Park lost two early wickets, Potgeiter bowled by John Williams and Salina lbw to Tim Mahoney but the fourth wicket pair of Francis and Ali- Khan steadied the ship and set about chasing down the Thatcham total.
With the weather closing in and conditions worsening Thatcham’s mainly spin attack struggled to grip the ball but Nick Monger still managed to bowl some useful legspin and he persuaded Ali- Khan to play too early and he took a fine return catch, but as long as Francis was in Marlow Park were favourites.
He finally fell for 67 to an excellent catch by Tom Mahoney at long on, again off Monger (2-38) and Thatcham were very much back in the game. Unfortunately the weather had the final say.
