Match report The poor weather was matched by Thatcham’s batting as they capitulated to an 89 run defeat at home to Royal Ascot on Saturday and now face a real battle to avoid relegation.

Edmund Edge provided the home side with an excellent start, troubling all the opposing batters and taking two early wickets, both English and Weston caught behind. Sweetman and Davies then added 77 before Perry Moore struck, removing both for 58 and 51 respectively.
Edge came back for a second spell and continued where he left off, picking up three more wickets for a maiden five wicket haul but Ascot managed a late flurry to reach 190-8 from their 48 overs.

Just over four an over needed for a vital win but it wasn’t to be. Rakesh Patel may have been unfortunate as Thatcham slipped to 20-3. Stuart Newman and Chris Wright then built a solid partnership and were just putting their side in a strong position when Newman holed out for 23.
The innings then turned into a procession as some disappointing batting handed the game to Ascot as only Wright (26) and Steve Bartholomew (22 not out) joined Newman in double figures as Weston (4-38) and Romer (4-23) benefitted from the home side’s generosity.
