Match report A much needed victory slipped from Thatcham II’s grasp on Saturday as they failed to chase down 154 at Cookham Dean.

With Ed Edge stuck in traffic John Williams was given the new ball and he made an immediate breakthrough, trapping Edlin lbw for 0 with an excellent quicker ball. The Millar brothers (45 and 17)then steadied the ship with a cautious partnership, broken by the introduction of Simon Rider and Nick Monger (1-23). Lambden looked good before he became Williams’ second victim. Nunn made 27 but none of the other batters could cope with Williams’ control and spin as he finished with 6-37 from 18 overs and was given good support by Rider, 3-31 as Cookham Dean were all out for 153 from the final ball of the innings.

The home side kept the old ball which combined with the lack of pace in the wicket and some decent bowling from Gandesha made scoring difficult. He took the first two wickets and when Iain Cottingham fell for 21 Thatcham were 31 for 3.
Tom Mahoney and Chris Rochfort steadied things, with the latter setting himself to stay in and Mahoney taking the lead role. They took the score to 75 when Mahoney chipped a return catch to Gandesha for 26. Robb Fraser came in and quickly settled but with Nunn bowling four consecutive maidens pressure built although still only six an over was needed.
Gandesha got Rochfort (13) and Nunn picked up two in successive overs but the captain was still there looking solid. Unfortunately a poor stroke saw him miscue to deep mid off for 21 and when Williams fell two balls later the game looked to over, one wicket left and eight overs to get it.
Edge and Matt Taylor had other ideas though and battled superbly, sneaking the score up towards Cookham Dean’s total. However, discretion was the better part of valour as they held on for the draw with Thatcham 12 short of victory, both 13 not out. Gandesha with 4-56 was the best of the bowlers.
