Wycombe Dragons II v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 4XI- Saturday on Sat 09 May 2009 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost by 143runs

Match report TTCC IV came up against a strong Wycombe Dragons II in their 2009 Thames Valley League Division 7b opener.

Missing a few senior players, Captain Liam Redmond won the toss and elected to lead his youthful looking team out to field first. On a good track the young TTCC attack found wickets hard to come by and it was only the introduction of the experienced Neil Stevenson in the 24 over that got the first wicket in his second over of the game. Taking the pace off the ball the Wycombe Dragons number 2 skied a chance to James Meagrow who confidently took a great catch to get the breakthrough and remove the opposition number 2 for a hard hitting and often lucky 60. Stevenson struck again in his forth over, removing the other opener for 48, courtesy of another great catch by Greg Cooper at backward point.

Thatcham’s bowlers and fielders carried on working hard and were rewarded with the third and forth wickets, again through Neil Stevenson when he removed Dragons number 4 for 35 and then number 3 for 41, bowled and caught & bowled respectively. Paul Holland, making his senior debut for the club, was rewarded with a much deserved first senior wicket when he removed the number 6 for 3 with a good caught & bowled and he also bagged himself a sharp run out off his own bowling in what proved to be the last wicket of the first innings, which finished on 293 for 6 off 50 overs declared.

Thatcham’s innings got off to a good start with Paul Sharp and Craig Beal putting on 41 for the first wicket, before Beal was adjudged LBW for 20. Neil Stevenson then joined Sharp at the crease, but the partnership was short lived as Sharp was given out LBW for 14. Under 15 starlet Josh Winfield then joined Stevenson at the crease and looked in very confident form, playing the shot of the game with an off drive for 4. However, he was unlucky to be caught at mid off for 12 from a well thought out slower ball. Stevenson carried on where he left off with the ball and continued to hold the Thatcham innings together, ably supported by James Meagrow (15). Once Stevenson was dismissed LBW for a fine 43, it was then a case of whether the Thatcham batters could hold on for the draw. Dave Wells (8) and Paul Holland (12) dug deep, but unfortunately the innings came to end 2.3 overs from the scheduled finished.

There were a lot of positives to be taken from today’s game, even through the scores looked very one sided. All of the youngsters that came in to the team bowled and fielded with great spirit and the team didn’t once let there heads drop throughout the days game. With the right blend of experience and youth, I think this team has a lot to show the division this season and I’m looking forward to the games ahead.
