Farnham Royal III v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 4XI- Saturday on Sat 18 Jul 2009 at 1.30pm
Match was Drawn

Match report Thatcham made the trip to Burnham to take on Farnham Royal III on Saturday but unfortunately things didn’t get off to a good start as they lost the toss and were invited to field on what looked like a track that would favour the batsman more than the bowlers.

Jamie Bishop, making his season debut for the IVs opened the bowling with the young and exciting under 15s prospect Jonny Courtney, who was making his senior debut for the club. Things got off to a good start as they bowled with great control and kept things tight, something which has been missing at the start off the innings all season for Thatcham. Courtney made the early breakthrough in his second over, removing the Farnham Royal Captain for a duck, courtesy of a brilliant catch by Nik Stewart behind the stumps. Bishop was next to strike as he had the other opener caught, trying to pull a ball that wasn’t quite there. The home side then put together the crucial partnership of the day as A Hussain (127 not out) and S Niese (69) put on 127 for the third wicket. Adrian Bromhead eventually broke up the partnership as he had Niese caught behind by Stewart. Hussain continued to punish the Thatcham bowlers and Farnham Royal finished on 273 for 5 wickets. For the second week in a row the opposition failed to show the courage to declare and give themselves more overs to bowl at the Thatcham batting line up as they batted the full 52 overs which in all honesty was probably 5 overs too many, which mirrored exactly the Wycombe Dragons innings the previous week.

After tea Mick Stone, fresh from his maiden hundred for the club took to the field with Dave Taylor to get things started for Thatcham. The team knew that if they were going to have any chance of chasing down such a big target in only 48 overs meant that things had to get off to a good start. Unfortunately it wasn’t to be as Stone couldn’t repeat the heroics of last week as he was caught at short leg for 9 runs. Thatcham struggled to put any notable partnerships together as only Darren Sopp (32) showed any real composure at the crease. With 10 overs to go things weren’t looking good for Thatcham as they were 8 wickets down and a long way from there target. However, the experience of Jamie Bishop (27 not out) and the tenacity of Greg Cooper (4 not out) managed to frustrate the home team as they couldn’t find anyway through their defence as they batted out the remaining overs for a draw.
