Slough V v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 4XI- Saturday on Sat 25 Jul 2009 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets

Match report The Thatcham fourth team completed an emphatic victory and in the process went four games unbeaten and climbed off the foot of the table for the first time this season by defeating Slough’s fifth team on Saturday.

After losing the toss and being invited to field things got off to a great start for Thatcham as they reduced the home team to 54 for 3 wickets. M Hashmi (71) managed to put some runs on the board during the middle of the innings; however wickets still kept falling and at 184 for 9 Thatcham were confident of bowling the hosts out for less than 200 and in doing so restricting the Slough team from getting maximum batting points. The experienced M Asif (71) and the young M Waheed (1 not out) had other ideas. Waheed played straight and held an end up frustrating the Thatcham fielders as his partner took advantage of a small boundary on certain areas of the field bludgeoning the ball to all parts taking his teams total to 237 at tea. Tristan Allen and Adrian Bromhead both got 3 wickets and Andy Stephenson and Tom Owen both pitched in with two for Thatcham.

Things couldn’t have got off to a worse start for Town after tea as Gadsden was caught at first slip on the first ball of the innings and things didn’t really pick up until promising under 17 James Meagrow joined Darren Sopp in the middle with Thatcham staring down the barrel at 49 for 4 wickets. Meagrow (28) and Sopp took their first few overs steady, getting their eye in against some good bowling. However, once set they started to take the attack to the opposition bowlers as they got the ball rolling with a partnership of 64 before Meagrow was bowled by Hashmi. This brought the seasoned Andy Stephenson to the crease and he straight away went about rotating the strike and picking off the bad balls. At this stage it still looked like Thatcham’s aim was 200 runs, therefore securing the maximum batting points they could obtain. However, with Stephenson and Sopp both set and the score steadily creeping up towards the 200 run target the Thatcham team sensed that they may be on the crest of a fantastic come back and a 20 point haul. As the score passed 200 and both batsmen hitting the ball with crisp timing the Slough teams heads started to drop. Even the introduction of the Slough opening bowler couldn’t halt the Thatcham run chase as they passed there target with 3.4 overs to spare, Stephenson finishing on 79 not out and Sopp 61 not out.

It was a very sweet victory for the Thatcham side as they looked dead and buried early on in their innings. Credit must go to James Meagrow as well as the two not out batsmen as along with Darren Sopp he started the Thatcham revival in the middle of the innings with a crucial 28 in the 64 partnership.
