Hampton Hill II v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 4XI- Saturday on Sat 08 Aug 2009 at 1.30pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost by 69 runs

Match report A weakened Thatcham team travelled to Bushy Park to play Hampton Hill in a clash that may prove to decide who finishes bottom of Thames Valley Division 7b.

The Hampton Hill skipper won the toss and had no hesitation in deciding to have first go with the bat. They made a quick start with 22 runs coming off the first 2 overs, however Pete Donnelly (1 wicket for 20 runs) managed to get the first breakthrough as he removed the home team captain for 1. Hampton Hill continued to score at a quick pace until the introduction of Neil Stevenson swung things back in Thatcham’s favour as he struck with only his second ball. Andy Stephenson then began to find his rhythm and accompanied by some brilliant fielding, especially from Tom Owen as he took a superb one handed catch diving to his right at gully, Thatcham began to exert some much needed pressure on the home batting line up. Neil Stevenson went onto finish a superb spell of bowling as he bowled 18 overs, 4 maidens, 5 wickets for only 50 runs and Andy Stephenson wasn’t far behind as he finished with 16 overs, 1 maiden, 3 wickets for 71 runs. Tom Owen was Thatcham’s other wicket taker as took the last wicket with Hampton Hill finishing on 177.

With a good but very gettable target to chase Thatcham were in good spirits at tea. However, things couldn’t have got off to a worse start. Thatcham’s top order was completely blown away by the home teams opening bowler Rowbottom. Playing only his third game in two years he bowled with pace and accuracy which the away side had no answer for as he took 5 wickets for 5 runs from 6 overs. With only 28 runs on the board and 7 of the Thatcham batsman showered, changed and ready for the long journey home Tom Owen joined his captain Liam Redmond at the crease. The only thought on both batsmen’s mind was to hang around and try and bring some respectability to the West Berkshire club. Owen (10) played the support role superbly, rotating the strike and giving Redmond as much of the ball to face as possible. As the overs started to tick by Thatcham were slowly but surely accumulating runs and Redmond brought up his 50 and his and Owens 50 partnership with a succession of boundaries. However, with the teams total on 83 Redmond unlucky played on and became Thatcham’s eighth batsman to return to the pavilion as he departed for 53. This ended any glimmer of hope that Thatcham may have had of pulling off an unlikely win. Pete Donnelly, ably supported by debutant 13 year old Adam Mather (0 not out), managed to get 19 runs at the end, taking Thatcham into 3 figures but when he was bowled it brought Thatcham’s innings to a close on a disappointing 108.
