Match report Another disappointing batting performance from Thatcham’s forth string lead to yet another defeat for the 2009 Thames Valley Division 7b campaign.

With, what on paper looked to be skipper Liam Redmond’s strongest batting line up to date he had no hesitation when winning the toss to elect to bat first. Things didn’t get off to the great of start for Thatcham however as Kieran Lynch (4) was dismissed in the first over. Neil Stevenson joined Bob Gadsden at the wicket and they set about trying to build a partnership. Both batsmen found it tough going against some slow, but very accurate bowling and when Gadsden (5) was caught lbw by the experienced Robinson with the score only on 19 from 12 overs things weren’t looking good for the home side. Darren Sopp (46 not out) did his best to try and get Thatcham to a competitive total but he ended up running out of partners and being left stranded 4 runs short of a much deserved half century as Thatcham were dismissed for 105 from only 35 overs.

After tea, Thatcham elected to open up with the old ball and the experienced pairing of Tony Wimbush and Neil Stevenson. Things got off to a good start as both bowlers picked up an early wicket to reduce the visitors to 18 for 2. However, even after taking the new ball and Ben Cruise bowling some tight and often hostile bowling Thatcham didn’t ever look like getting the 10 wickets required to pull off a near on impossible come back. Cruise did pick up 1 wicket, but opener Grinstead (52 not out) steered his team to victory, a 20 point haul and an early finish as Bagshot got home in just 23 overs.
