Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1st X1 - Sunday v South Wilts on Sun 06 Jun 2004 at 2.00pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost 5 runs

Match report An enthralling encounter saw Thatcham’s 1st XI narrowly defeated against South Wilts on Sunday.
Having elected to bat, the visitors found it tough going as Julian Wood found pace and bounce in an aggressive opening spell. With Nick Bishop (0-19 from 8) as economical as ever, Thatcham began to exert pressure and when first change Bradman Ediriweera had Taylor caught at slip, Thatcham took the early advantage.
Another Ediriweera dismissal and two in two balls from veteran off spinner Tony Wimbush (2 for 36) saw the Wiltshire side slump to 76 for 4, but with opener Cranch still in place it was to prove a false dawn for the home side.
Having struggled early on, Cranch began to find his form and with ample support from Patel (58*) and the powerful Kruger (45) he completed his century before becoming Ediriweera’s third victim for a fine 113. A late flurry saw the South Wilts innings finish on a competitive 266 from 45 overs.
Thatcham’s response was electrifying as big guns Wood and Ediriweera set about demolishing the South Wilts opening attack. Wood was particularly explosive as he took full advantage of Kruger’s pacy but erratic spell with a series of trademark blows. With Thatcham racing along at 10 an over, South Wilts looked shell shocked until Wood, having smashed Smith for a monstrous straight six, tried one too many and was bowled for 28.
Ediriweera was joined by Dan Stone and the two continued, in albeit more circumspect fashion to move comfortably towards the South Wilts total. However, when Ediriweera finally went for a fine 78 the run rate slowed and despite a hard worked 30 from Steve Wyatt, it was left to Stone to see the tail through to victory.
Thatcham were still in the driving seat until the two Birds, Chris and Frank were run out in consecutive balls leaving a nervous Tony Wimbush to help Stone see Thatcham home. Smashing his first ball for four, Wimbush looked set to grab the glory but with just six required from the final over Smith cleaned bowled the gutsy tail ender leaving Stone stranded on an impressive 61 and Thatcham defeated by 5 runs.
