Purley on Thames CC Saturday 1st XI v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday on Sat 25 May 2024 at 13:00
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won By 117 runs
Match report
“What’s happened to Purley then?” was the question Basil asked during our post-match beers on Saturday. Truth be told, they just got Trout-ed. That’s 13 unbeaten in the league, a streak that runs back to Cove at the start of last July.
The skipper made it 3 tosses from 3 and again asked us to bat first on a sticky pitch. Jamie and Klicks started well. Both looked to be aggressive with their running between the wickets and negotiated the first 10 overs without a scare, putting 45 on the board. That caused Purley to make a change to the bowling and unfortunately they found someone who could bowl straight. Second ball of his spell and Klicky was poled for 19. Jamie followed a few overs later as he was struck on his hip and had to depart LBW for 29. In came George, looking to show his old side exactly what they had lost out on, but it was his new side that were searching for the receipt as he was caught for 0. BDP joined Jack and the pair had to absorb a bit of Purley pressure with the game in the balance at 70-3. After a nervy start we got back on top with a 50 partnership and looked to kick on with just over 15 overs to go. In typical Trout fashion we made life tougher for ourselves as Ben was called through for a single only to be short of his ground, when perhaps a dive could have saved him. At least Klicky saw the funny side of it.. Gary was next to come and go as he was trapped plum in front to a ball which was definitely not going two-foot down legside. Jack passed his third 50 in as many games but unlike last week we struggled to kick on at the back end as a combination of a slow outfield and tricky pitch halted our progress. Bart and Arun struck a few boundaries but not even the Finisher (8 off 11) could get us up to 200, with Birdy running himself out on the last ball to give Purley another point. Perhaps taking George’s words of being nice to the opposition too literally (more on this later…). We finished on 195-9, which represented a good score in the conditions but equally could have been so much more.
With the prospect of Biryani and beers ahead of us, we wanted to be clinical with the ball and the usual opening pair of Greener and Odhinn bowled well. Impressively it took Odhinn 5 overs this week to bowl a wide, with BDP mentioning that fact to him after every ball he bowled. Was great to watch both cause so many issues for the Purley batters, with Greener picking up the early rewards taking 4 wickets in a top 9 over spell where he only conceded 24 runs. Odhinn (1-18) at the other end kept it equally as tight and on another day could have picked up a few more wickets himself. We restricted them to 28-5 and could almost smell the Biryani being cooked up at HQ. After not bowling last week following his 5for the week before, Barty got a bowl this week and backed up the openers work, picking up a couple of wickets in a tight spell. At 72-7 Birdy was very keen to get his mop out but the skipper turned to the Goat first as he picked up our next wicket. Birdy finally got a bowl but not before having a strop about going to play at Falkland 2s, although he’s probably still 5-10 years too young to get in that side. He and Arun mopped up the innings pretty quickly as we bowled them out for 78 and for the second week running we bowled a side out for under 80. Greener did most the damage but was well backed up by Odhinn, Bart and the spinners.
The Trouts are on the road again next week, away at Theale and Tilehurst and we expect a step up in opposition. A few changes to the side this week but there are strong rumours of the return of the better Moore.
DOTD goes to George for asking us to be nice to his old friends and just general bumming of the opposition.
