Theale and Tilehurst CC 1st XI v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday on Sat 01 Jun 2024 at 13:00
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Lost by 83 runs

Match report It took an ex-Pakistan test cricketer and an unbeaten 150 from Rehan Akram, previously of Reading, to drown the Trouts unbeaten streak.

Winning the toss again and having won 3 from 3 batting first, George decided we’d have a bowl. To be fair, we got off to a very good start. Oscar returned on day release from school and took the new ball with Greener. Greener got the Theale opener for 0 and Oscar took a caught and bowled to reduce them to 20-2. In truth, that’s as good as it got as a man who averages over 40 in first class cricket strolled in at number 4 to join Akram. After they absorbed a bit of pressure the pair started to play their shots and we couldn’t control the scoring rate, dropping 8 catches probably didn’t help. The pair targeted the 45 yard boundary, with the Goat’s last over being hit for 4 sixes. Oscar returned to the attack late on and finally broke the 223 run stand as BDP clung on to a catch on the rope. This allowed us to restrict the runs a bit more for the last 10 or so overs, building some dot balls on the new batter, who despite having only 10 overs left was happy to dot it out. It could have got better for us as Akram hit one down Jack’s throat at long on, who took the catch, only for the square leg umpire to call a no ball for Birdy being 1 foot outside the 20 yard circle. Odhinn took a couple of late wickets, including Bozarth who was unable to provide a late assault on the Thatcham attack. They finished on 317-5 after 45 overs. Not at our best in the field but fair play to the two players who had a day out and took the game away from us.

We knew it would take something special to chase down the score but with Troutball anything is possible. A new opening partnership of Barty and George went out to face the new ball. George paid homage to the missing Klicky, as he continued his fine form with the bat by missing a straight one for 0. 1-1 and Baz chipped in with his input: “Back to usual then”. Barty and Jack looked to battle through Viljoen and Bozarth’s assault, as the pair bowled aggressively and looked threatening. The pair scored at a good rate and were up for the fight as we ticked along at around 5 an over until just before drinks, when Barty was out LBW for 30. With us 120 odd for 2 at drinks, we were still in the game, needing around 10 an over for 20 overs. The Goat was pushed up the order and whacked a quick 30 before being caught on the boundary. With a lack of 6 hitters in the team, we struggled to keep up with the run rate with Jack (70) and Harley (31) both being caught in quick succession. The finisher provided a glimpse of what he could do with a towering straight 6, only to be outdone by a bigger one from Oscar soon after. Wickets kept tumbling and Greener was the last man in. He was straight on the sweep, hitting his first ball for 4. Perhaps a promotion up the order is needed? Next ball he was caught on the boundary and we were bowled out for 234.

A tough day all round but as batterings go, this one was quite a positive one. We were beaten by 2 men who performed well but we stuck together and showed plenty of fight. If we took our catches, it might have been a different story. The Trout’s go again against next week against Wargrave at HQ.

DOTD – There was no official vote, however I have made the decision it goes to the Goat for turning up late. I look forward to him redeeming his poundsworth next week. An honourable mention to Harley, who justified only working 3 days a week because he works long shifts of 7 hours.

Dinger race:
Barty – 2
Jack – 3
Arun – 3
Harley – 1
Oscar – 1
The finisher – 1
Gary – 1
