Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v Finchampstead 3 on Sat 29 Jul 2023 at 1:00pm
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won
Match report
The rain stayed away at Brownsfield on Saturday as Thatcham beat Finchampstead by 55 runs and took another big step towards promotion.
Thatcham won the toss and elected to bat first. As ever Klichowicz and Williams went out looking to score and get the hosts off to a flyer. Both struck boundaries early on but with the ball stopping in the pitch a little and a slow outfield due to the rain the pair had to battle for their runs. Storkey, who proved to be the pick of the Finch bowlers, picked up a couple of wickets in his first spell as Klichowicz (13) edge to slip at 32-1 and then Williams (28) was also caught with the score on 59-2. This brought the inform Brown and Young to the crease and the pair instantly looked to be aggressive as the visitors now turning to spin. Brown, not at his fluent best looked to rotate the strike as Young proved to be the aggressor, using his feet and hitting the ball over the top. A ten over spell yielded 62 for the hosts before Brown was bowled by Ahmed for 23. At 121-3 after 22 overs, Thatcham were in the ascendancy but needed a partnership to push home their advantage. Wheeler joined his skipper and looked to build on the positive start. Young, having passed 50 looked set for a big one as he accumulated through the middle overs looking to set up a big finish with the bat. Wheeler had started to hit his stride as he launched a couple of towering sixes straight down the ground. The pair put on 73 when Young looked to up the anti and was caught for 78 off just 72 balls. At 184-4, Thatcham were looking to get to around the 250 mark after 45 overs and then declaring. They looked well on course to do this as Jamie Young and Wheeler put on another 20 runs before a collapse saw the score go from 214-4 to 221 all out. Storkey the pick of the bowlers as he ran through the Thatcham middle to lower order for his 6 wickets. 30 runs short of what was planned and it is fair to say the faithful Thatcham supporters were livid with the final 10 overs but the Trouts believed it to be a very good score on a wicket offering plenty for the bowlers.
The visitors got off to a slow but steady approach with the bat. Moore proving to be as miserly as ever only going for 12 off his 5 overs. Green also threatened early on but the ball seemed to evade the Thatcham fielders. A double bowling change brought rewards for the hosts as first Bird and then Wheeler removed both openers with the score on 53. Finch looked to rebuild and as they looked to get going again, Brown struck, having the Finch captain caught excellently by Bird. Another small partnership grew before the returning Green found the breakthrough for Thatcham. At 116-4 with 20 overs to go the game was in the balance as all 3 results were possible, especially with the Finch number 3 looking solid. Moore then produced a moment of magic as he ran out the Finch number 3 with a direct hit from the boundary. This proved to be a game changing moment as from then on in it allowed Hemming to get into his work and claim 4 wickets in 8 overs. Credit to Finch as they kept going for the win all the way until the end, but when Hemming took his final wicket the hosts were 55 runs short, falling all out for 166 in the 49th over. Had Thatcham looked to bat out the 52 overs like some had suggested, this match would have been a draw, so yet again it proved just rewards for Thatcham's approach to their innings.
That makes it 4 wins on the bounce for Thatcham and they feel in confident form as they take on Purley next week in what could turn out to be a title decider.
