Match report Trouts Assemble to Avenge at Wargrave
The Silver Trouts faced a return to a ground with previous horror memories. Last year, it was at the hands of Wargrave’s 3rd team that the Trouts were bowled all out for 72, losing by 8 wickets, and back at base by 4:30pm. On the day, the conditions reminisced of 10 months ago, grey skies, rain in the air, and dreaded memories that the second pitch at Wargrave lacked covers. The main difference was no Harley, who last season kicked his helmet from the pitch to the boundary rope.
Earlier in the week the skipper communicated an 11am meet at HQ for a midday meet at Wargrave. Lewis Senior took this all too seriously and was early (for a change), taking his youngest to the same venue, as Rhys’ day with the bat was done before any other member of Thatcham turned up. On the other hand, OT and returning #TaylorTime were left waiting for a straggling O Reeves, who turned up at 11:20, blaming Mrs Reeves for spending too long in David Lloyd (lets hope it was leg day).
The Trouts finally made it to the ground where the changing rooms sit a five-minute walk from the pitch, leaving Simon to walk over in his whites and continue to warm up in his whites (see DOTD). And due to the mammoth walk, Tommy tossed off with the opposition skipper before a warmup could even take place. Unsurprisingly, Mather won the initial contest and elected to bowl; unlike last year, where T Mather lost the toss and made us bat.
Off to a good start already, unfortunately there was no time for an “oi, is everyone ‘ere?!” from the skipper in the changing rooms. Instead, an inspirational talk from the skipper was saved for a huddle in the outfield. However, this time, Mr Lewis decided it was his job to rally the troops, (leading to further nominations for DOTD with the award pretty much nailed on before the team took the field). The new ball again thrown to the reliable Pompey fans Thorne and promoted Cox, the latter Skate fresh from last week’s 5-fer. At home, Rochy was fuming knowing the opening pair had one up on him over the last 2 weeks (Roch is falling apart again). OT got off to another great start, taking his 100th senior wicket*, snicking off the number 2 for a golden duck with the 3rd ball of the innings, with stand in ‘keeper Eddie Wylie, having a juggling lesson before catching it.

Cox’s spell didn’t start as well with Luke Taylor (known for his ability to pull) hitting 3 drag downs from Coxy for 4 runs. The two batsmen settled into a good rhythm frustrating Town, putting up a 50 partnership before debutant Vinit Nair (Vinnie Jones – don’t ask how that is a thing) broke the partnership, with a moon ball. The Wargrave skipper visibly angry. Vinnie took another two wickets, either side of him attempting to catch two off of Oscar Reeves, one bursting through his hands, and the other a skier that the Mean Machine was frankly in another postcode for. He did, however, cling on for a caught and bowled on the fall of the 5th wicket, to finish 3-33 off his allocated overs. Babu Periyasamy starred in the middle part of the innings in the field, putting the mis fields of the first 10 overs aside, to take a skied catch off the bowling of Reeves, before running out the Wargrave number 5, after a Barbecue coming back for two. Paul Hemming, continued his dry patch, going wicketless for a third game in a row (how slow is too slow?). The captain once again turned to himself too late, only giving himself the opportunity to bowl 7 overs into the wind and took an impressive 1-29 at that stage of the innings. At the other end, ‘the hoover’ OT returned and took another 2 wickets for little runs at the death, finishing with 3-41, restricting Wargrave to what they thought was an out of sight 207-9.
In truth, thankfully for Lewie, not many twos would be run throughout the day as the outfield was rapid. Any shot beating the infield would run to the boundary. This sounded too tempting for Simon as he slashed early at a wide one from the opener, hoping to avoid point which he managed - only to be caught at slip for 10. Thorne came in at 3 hoping for a better performance than the previous week and joined his captain as the Trouts looked to apply pressure back to the bowlers. The pair ran well and frustrated the fielding team with the left-right combination, running singles to the infield at will. It would be the skipper, Mather, who would take the more aggressive option playing aerially down the ground hitting 10 boundaries in all passing his second half century of the season in the process. At 99-1, it was the introduction of spin that started the collapse as Thorne got bowled by a ball that slid on with the arm for 29. The captain would follow a few balls later getting stumped trying to run claiming “I thought I’d hit it to third man”. Taylor, following up on his TFC from a fortnight ago, would fall for nought shortly after hoicking a full ball high into the off-side and being caught. Thanks for coming Matt. Hemming and Wylie steadied the ship, with the Ginger Lara playing a heritage GL innings, bringing 50 up off 40 balls, the majority of which being hit behind square, and absolutely blowing (does Mrs Reeves need a training partner at David Lloyd?). At the other end, Hemming anchored, scoring much more slowly than his partner, managing to make it to the late twenties before his, and Wylie’s wickets were taken, sending nerves through the camp. Last week’s MOTM Britter joined Babu as the two guided the team home with 5 overs to spare, winning by 4 wickets. A superb team performance.
