Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday v Bagshot CC 1st XI on Sat 18 May 2024 at 13:00
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 108 runs
Match report
The Trouts were a different kettle of fish as we beat Bagshot by 107 runs on our first home league game of the season on Saturday.
George won another toss and decided to have a bat. Klicks and Jammer battled hard on a pitch that proved tough to score on throughout the day. Thankfully the Bagshot bowlers were feeling generous and provided a few wides to get us going. 32-0 after 10 overs represented a good start for us but just as it looked like we were about to kick on Klicks missed a straight one again. Jack joined Jamie and after a few attempts to run each other out, Jamie snicked off in the 15th over. For the next 20 overs we found it hard to score. Jack continued where he left off from Reading last week, chewing up a lot of deliveries and the skipper was struggling to hold the bat, complaining about a bad thumb from a dropped catch last week. 28 overs in and we only had 70 odd on the board and so George tried to kick on. He successfully pumped the spinner over his head once before trying it again and holing out to mid off as he trudged off for 15 at an impressive strike rate of 33. BDP strolled in and again added some impetus to the innings with a quickish 15 before being caught on the boundary.
After a disappointing start to the Trout dinger race last week with no sixes to report, Arun took things into his own hands as he pumped his first ball into the houses, nearly cleaning out the bloke jet washing his house. He followed that with another four before being cleaned up for 10 off 5 balls. That kick started the final 10 overs or so, as last years dinger race champion Jack hit one of his own to bring up his 50 and Gary also cleared the ropes. Wickets however continued to fall as Jack ran passed a straight one and then Gary, returning from his trip home to pick up his spikes (more on this later) hit one straight up in the air. Barty came to the crease and raced out the traps like a greyhound who had had its bollocks tickled and made a very important 24 including two dingers to push us up towards a competitive total. Bart was supported by the self-proclaimed “Finisher”, who smashed a beautiful on drive first up on his way to 15. We finished on 183-8. A reasonable score on a tough pitch and slow outfield, we were satisfied with our work but probably left a few runs out there in the middle period.
Odhinn opened the bowling and looked threatening with a few customary wides thrown in. Greener at the over end looked like he had put on a yard of pace, following breaking a bail in the week. We picked up an early one as Greener snicked off the opener, Jamie taking a diving (falling) one handed catch. Through the noise of our celebrations, you could still hear Baz say move your feet… We didn’t take another wicket for 10 overs or so as George shifted the pack. Arun bowled tightly without reward, before Greener took his 2nd and 3rd wicket in his 7th over, reducing them to 35-3. From that point on it was the spinners show with Birdy getting to work and knocking a couple over with the snake ball. Gaza at the other end bowled nicely and picked up a couple of wickets himself. He could have had a third if it wasn’t for a dropped chance at mid off (5:20:58 on the live stream if anyone’s interested). 35-1 became 49-7 and it was time for Webbs to get his mop out. He took the last wicket by trapping the batter plumb(ish) in front to give Birdy his first 5 wicket haul of the season. A top effort from all the bowlers to bowl them out for 76 and well backed up in the field meant we didn’t let them back in the game like we did last week. Birdy (5-17) took the headlines but was well supported by Greener (3-16) and Gary (2-19).
The Trouts travel to Purley next week, the old home of our skipper and look to make it 3 wins from 3 with an unchanged side.
DOTD goes to Gary who on his debut, forgot his spikes and had to miss part of the warm up to go home and get them.
Dinger race:
Barty – 2
Arun – 1
Gary – 1
Jack – 1
