Hurst CC 1st XI v Thatcham Town Cricket Club Thatcham 1XI- Saturday on Sat 29 Jun 2024 at 13:00
Thatcham Town Cricket Club Won by 109 runs
Match report
On a day where 11 South African’s choked in the Caribbean, two of our resident Saffa’s stood firm to bring 25 points back from Hurst on Saturday.
In truth we don’t have great memories of playing at Hurst in recent years, including our last outing on the final day of the season to see us relegated from Division 2, thanks to some last over pies from Jack…
Anyway, George won the toss and despite wanting to bowl first, Birdy, fresh from his stand in skipper success last week talked some sense into George and we batted first. Klicks and Jammer reunited at the top of the order and both looked in good touch as they punished some loose deliveries early on, putting on 27 in quick time before Jamie was bowled. Klicky continued on his merry way and for the first time found himself with a strike rate above 50. He and Jack were going well as Klicky passed 50, backing up last weeks knock, until Jack couldn’t resist trying to put the slow left armer over the hedges and was bowled for 38. In typical Trout fashion we then had a little wobble as 115-1 became 130-4. Klicky fell LBW for a well made 66 off 69, which included 13 fours, showing off his good form by getting his pads in the way of straight ones now. The skipper and Gary rebuilt the innings beautifully as they took us over the 200 mark and then looked to kick on. Both struck it cleanly as we looked to eye up a declaration before they fell in quick succession. It was then left to the Goat and the finisher to get us up to 250+ as they struck a few late boundaries. Arun hit a couple of towering sixes and the finisher, after taking his time to get in, was ready to launch before George called them in after 49 overs, leaving Odhinn stranded on his joint highest score of 15. We finished on 262-7, leaving Hurst 51 overs to reach our total.
Hurst started their innings like they had had a half time talk from Gareth Southgate as they showed a lack of intent from the off. Greener and Oscar bowled beautifully as we restricted Hurst early on. Greener then got a well deserved breakthrough getting one to bounce off a length and rip the glove of the Hurst opener and then sent the off stump cartwheeling two balls later for our second. Odhinn was introduced into the attack and continued on from last week. He produced a beauty to get the big wicket of Hurst’s skipper and soon claimed “2021 Odhinn was back”. Two balls later and a wide off the strip confirmed 2024 Odhinn was back. Greener then got his third wicket as his 9 over spell of 3-13 come to an end. Birdy got straight into his work as Harley, who recovered from last weeks cramp, took a smart catch at mid on. The Goat also chipped in with a couple of wickets and the Trouts could smell victory at drinks with Hurst at 74-7. We looked to finish the game off and get back to HQ for Australian night, however Hurst didn’t make it easy for us as 12 overs or so went by without another wicket. George threw the ball to Gary and he got an instant breakthrough and Odhinn then got a further wicket next over. Hurst’s number 4 looked to farm the strike for the last 10 overs, which began to frustrate us, leaving only 1 or 2 balls at the number 11 each over. Gary managed to get one to grip and found the inside edge of the number 11 and it fell into the grateful arms of Jack at short leg to secure the victory with 5 overs to go.
A great effort and all round performance from the boys, batting positively to set up the declaration and then bowling well as a unit. The Trouts are now up to third and go into next weeks clash against table topers Finchampstead looking to make a splash.
Dinger race:
Arun – 5
Jack – 3
Gary – 3
Barty – 2
Harley – 1
Oscar – 1
The finisher – 1
No DOTD voted on this week. Will make sure this returns next week.
